Somboon Legacy Foundation - Hands-Off Elephant Sanctuary
Set in the natural surroundings of Kanchanaburi province, this wildlife sanctuary operates on a strictly hands-off philosophy, placing elephant welfare above tourist interaction. Visitors observe rescued elephants living in spacious, natural conditions rather than participating in riding, bathing, or physical contact activities — a distinction that sets it apart from the majority of elephant tourism operations in Thailand. The foundation's approach combines observation with education, giving guests genuine insight into elephant behaviour, conservation efforts, and the rehabilitation work carried out on site. The experience is contemplative rather than performative. Knowledgeable volunteers guide visitors through the sanctuary, explaining the stories of individual elephants and the broader mission of ethical wildlife care. Reviewers consistently highlight the sanctuary's integrity, noting that it stands among a small number of genuinely ethical elephant sanctuaries in the country. Multilingual guidance has been noted by visitors, reflecting the sanctuary's efforts to accommodate international travellers. Good to know: Opening hours are not publicly listed, so contacting the sanctuary directly before visiting is strongly recommended to confirm schedules and availability. The sanctuary is located in Tambon Klon Do, Kanchanaburi — allow adequate travel time from Bangkok or nearby towns. Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes suitable for outdoor terrain, bring sun protection, and dress for warm conditions. This experience suits travellers who prioritise responsible wildlife tourism and are prepared for an observational rather than hands-on visit.

Visitor Reviews
For anyone who would like to see the majestic elephants, please only visit ethical sanctuaries. No, you shouldn’t be expecting to touch, bathe or ride elephants. Somboon Legacy Foundation is one of those ethical sanctuaries and I’m so grateful to have joined the full day programme. 1. Amazing experience to observe and learn about the elephants: First, you get introduced to the 4 elderly elephants and learn their history and quirks. Then, you get to observe them from afar doing many activities: eating watermelon, bathing, throwing mud on their back. The elephants were not forced to do anything for the amusement of tourists, and were simply living as naturally as they could after being retired from various unfortunate circumstances. 2. The rest of the programme was great: you get to learn so much from the guides and the museum. In addition, you contribute by collecting banana leaves and cutting watermelons. No time was wasted and it was well thought out (good mix of observing, learning, contributing). 3. Guides were amazing: Big thank you to Martini and Julie who took such great care of us. We enjoyed learning from them and engaging in spirited discussions. 4. Lunch was fantastic: We had pineapple rice, pad thai, plate of fruits overlooking the river. 5. Value for money: You get return transfer, programme from 10am-4pm and lunch. Plus, it goes to the maintenance of the foundation. Please visit Somboon Legacy Foundation. I would like to turn back time and relive the experience :)
Visiting Somboon Elephant Sanctuary was definitely one of the best experiences of our trip to Thailand! The sanctuary’s mission and care for the elephants were truly inspiring and was seen throughout our time there. Our tour guides, Jane and Gabriel, were incredibly knowledgeable and engaging. They shared fascinating details about each elephant’s background and the sanctuary’s ethical approach to animal care. The entire experience, while being a No-Touch Sanctuary, still felt very hands on. The elephants were seen in a calm, natural environment where they clearly felt comfortable and safe. It’s heartwarming to see a place that prioritizes the well-being of these amazing animals over tourist entertainment. I highly recommend Somboon Legacy Foundation to anyone looking for an ethical, educational, and unforgettable experience with elephants. Thank you Jane and Gabriel for making the day so special!
Yesterday we had a wonderful opportunity to spend the day in this place. We really enjoyed this amazing experience—the tour was interesting and educational, and we were provided with a Ukrainian-speaking guide (Kateryna, thank you, you’re amazing). It was a pleasant and unexpected surprise! The other volunteers were great as well. We visited the elephant museum, helped prepare their food, and watched the elephants eat, walk, and bathe. We also had very delicious dinner (right at the beginning when we arrived)! It was my Birthday, and I was even given a small symbolic gift, which was very nice. Overall, the day was fantastic—I definitely recommend going! Don’t be afraid that the experience won’t be as cool as if you could touch the elephants—that’s not true. It’s still an unforgettable experience and please go to support such places!
Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours
Vet Elephant Sanctuaries
Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.
Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide
These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.
Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning
Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
