Pong Pu Fueng Hot Spring
Located along a road in Mae Suai District, Chiang Rai, this natural hot spring was once a modest roadside attraction drawing visitors curious about its geothermal waters. At its best, it offered a simple, no-frills experience in a rural northern Thailand setting, with visitors notably using the hot spring water to cook eggs — a traditional and popular activity at hot springs across the region. However, recent visitor accounts paint a different picture. As of late 2025, the site appears to have fallen into abandonment, with little to no facilities remaining and the hot spring no longer operational. While the entrance is accessible by car, parking is limited and the surrounding area shows signs of neglect. For travellers with a specific interest in hot springs, the good news is that at least two other hot springs with significantly better facilities are reportedly located nearby on the same road, making those the more practical alternatives for a comfortable visit. Anyone planning a trip to this particular site should check its current status before making the journey, as conditions on the ground may continue to change. It is best treated as a secondary option rather than a dedicated destination.

Visitor Reviews
The best place to cook onsen egs.
Very basic
It has become an abandoned hot spring. The entrance is convenient. Cars can drive right to the entrance of the hot spring, but parking might be a bit difficult because the area has been abandoned and the grass has grown overgrown. The hot spring itself is quite complete and beautiful. The hot spring water that bubbles up has a rather hot temperature with smoke and a slight sulfur smell. The hot spring that bubbles up has become a bamboo shoot boiling pond for the local villagers. On the ground and in the small stream around it, you can sit down and feel the hot steam continuously emanating from it. There is a pipe connecting the hot water from the well to use at a nearby resort. It is another beautiful hot spring, unfortunately, it lacks proper maintenance and has been allowed to deteriorate until it has become deserted.
Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours
Vet Elephant Sanctuaries
Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.
Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide
These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.
Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning
Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
