Doi Tung Royal Villa
Perched in the hills of Mae Fa Luang district in Chiang Rai, Doi Tung Royal Villa served as the summer residence of the Princess Mother (Somdet Ya) and remains one of northern Thailand's most culturally significant landmarks. Built in 1987 using Her Royal Highness's personal funds, the villa blends Swiss chalet and traditional Lanna architectural styles, and its original interior furnishings and living spaces are preserved for visitors to view. The villa forms part of the broader Doi Tung Development Project, a landmark royal initiative that transformed the surrounding region. Visitors can explore the villa's interior, where polished wooden panels and well-maintained rooms offer a glimpse into royal life, as well as the surrounding botanical gardens and flower park — a carefully landscaped creation attributed to the Princess Mother herself. Photography is permitted in most areas, though video recording inside the living quarters is not allowed, and roped-off sections mean observation is from a respectful distance. The gardens are particularly impressive and draw visitors in their own right. The villa is open every day from 08:00 to 17:00, making it accessible throughout the week. The access road is notably steep, so visitors travelling by private vehicle or tour should plan accordingly. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, as exploring the gardens and grounds involves a fair amount of walking. Arriving earlier in the day is advisable to avoid midday heat and to allow enough time to appreciate both the villa and the surrounding park at a relaxed pace.

Visitor Reviews
Doi Tung Royal Villa and Mae Fae Lung flower park, is a work of art and creation of the princess mother. Her own villa comes intact with its original settings, are avaliable for the public to view. A magnificent villa, well decorated and designed, show case the simplicity of her lifestyle. One of the best artpiece would the ceiling that depicts the 12 constellations and lights pinpointing its shape. In addition to the villa, there is the flower garden that is noted to be one of the best designed in the entire thailand. Well crafted, great selection of flowers and a beautiful architecture that compliments with it. Entry fees are 90baht/pax per attraction (there are a total of 3 attractions). 2 x coffeestalls avaliable (1 in the flower garden but priced ridiculously high) Nevertheless, a must to visit!
22/12/2025. The villa is up a quite steep road. Nice to see all the polished wooden panels. You can not do videos of the internal living area which are roped off. But you may observe. A very nice villa with plenty of flowers and shrubs. Back down the road to the gardens. A lot of steps and walking. Flower displays were superb. Bamboo walkways over the water for instagram.. It is a huge garden set in a valley with steep bankings full of flower beds. Food and drink sellers with seating areas to relax and take in the colours. I imagine it is a cooler seasonal time for the flower displays. The ticket is for three parts. 1 part is 9km away. I choose the villa and the garden which are together. Price 180 baht. Well worth it.
Doi Tung Royal Villa Doi Tung Royal Villa, also known as the Princess Mother’s Royal Villa, was built in 1987 using Her Royal Highness’s personal funds, with the intention of transforming it into a royal residence and workplace. It is located along the ridgeline of the Doi Nang Non mountain range, offering expansive panoramic views. The villa features Lanna-style architecture blended with elements of traditional Swiss mountain houses. A major highlight is the “Star Ceiling” inside the main audience hall, where the stars are arranged to match the constellation pattern on the day of Her Royal Highness’s birth. Carved from mountain pine wood, the ceiling depicts various constellations surrounding the solar system.

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours
Vet Elephant Sanctuaries
Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.
Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide
These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.
Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning
Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
