Lanta Old Town
Lanta Old Town is a relaxed, atmospheric stretch of traditional wooden shophouses lining Ko Lanta Yai's southeastern coast, offering a quieter and more characterful alternative to the island's busier northern port area. The architecture alone gives the town its distinct appeal, with weathered timber buildings housing a mix of souvenir shops, local craft stores, and laid-back cafes and restaurants. A wooden pier extends out over the water, providing sweeping views across the strait that visitors consistently highlight as a highlight of any stroll through the area. The pace here is deliberately slow. Visitors can browse shops for gifts and handmade crafts, settle into a cafe balcony with a fresh fruit shake, or simply walk the street and take in the old-town character. While many of the souvenir shops carry similar stock, the overall charm of the setting — and the quality of the food and drink options — makes it a worthwhile stop. A weekend market also adds extra activity on select evenings. Good to know: Lanta Old Town is compact and easily explored on foot within an hour or two, making it well suited as a half-day trip rather than a standalone full-day excursion. Those with their own transport can combine the visit with nearby attractions, including an elephant sanctuary on the route back. Independent travellers with a scooter or hire car will find getting here straightforward, and the relaxed atmosphere means any time of day works well for a visit.

Visitor Reviews
Quaint and quiet area with nice quality gifts and crafts. A slow paced town with a nice wharf. The views from the wharf are fabulous. Many nice restaurant to choose from. A great variety of tasty desserts, creamy ice cream, croissants, creme brulee, pain au chocolate and mango crunch to name a few. Easy to get to from the west side.
Good short trip and worth visiting. Variety of shops to browse and a number of good cafes and restaurants. We enjoyed resting at Sephia cafe and sat on the balcony drinking our fruit shakes to cool down. Prices throughout the old town were very reasonable and at times better than other tourist areas.
Really enjoyed our stroll around old town. Its mainly souvenir shops and food outlets. But much quieter than the northern port area. Would recommend and pop into the elephant sanctuary on the way back 👌

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture
Dress Modestly
Cover shoulders and knees at all temples. Carry a light scarf or sarong — some temples lend wraps, but not all. Shoes come off before entering any building with a Buddha image.
Mind Your Feet
Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.
Ask Before Photographing
Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
