Klai Kangwon Palace

3.9(51 reviews)

Klai Kangwon Palace is a historically significant royal residence situated along Phet Kasem Road in Hua Hin, bearing a name that translates loosely to "Far from Worries." Built during the reign of King Rama VII, the palace has long held an important place in Thai royal history and remains an official royal property under the current monarchy. Despite its cultural and historical significance, the palace is not accessible to tourists or the general public. Multiple visitors have confirmed that armed military personnel are stationed at the entrance and that access is restricted to staff and official visitors. This change is understood to have taken effect under the current reign, and the palace grounds serve governmental and royal functions rather than as a tourism destination. Travellers who make a special trip here specifically to visit the palace are likely to be turned away at the gate. While the exterior and surrounding area along Phet Kasem Road can be viewed from a distance, there is little to see as a casual visitor. Those interested in royal and cultural heritage in Hua Hin are better served by exploring other nearby attractions in the area. It is worth noting that online listings for this location have not been consistently updated to reflect its closed status, so travellers should plan accordingly and not rely on posted hours.

We stood in front of 2 military guards who told us that the palace is permanetly closed to the public. When asked, they stated that this has changed under the new king. This hasn't been updated on the official tourist homepage!

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture

Dress Modestly

Cover shoulders and knees at all temples. Carry a light scarf or sarong — some temples lend wraps, but not all. Shoes come off before entering any building with a Buddha image.

Mind Your Feet

Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.

Ask Before Photographing

Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
