Sala Chalermkrung Royal Theatre

4.6(3,388 reviews)

Sala Chalermkrung Royal Theatre is one of Bangkok's most storied cultural venues, staging traditional Khon performances — Thailand's classical masked dance theatre — in a beautifully preserved Art Deco building in the heart of the historic Phra Nakhon district. The theatre brings ancient Thai mythology to life, with elaborately costumed performers enacting scenes from the Ramakien epic, accompanied by live classical music. Productions include English translations and narration, making the experience accessible to international visitors unfamiliar with the art form. Inside, the theatre maintains a pristine, formal atmosphere befitting its royal heritage. Performances are professionally executed by dedicated dancers and musicians, and the venue's staff are noted for being welcoming and attentive. The shows offer a genuine window into one of Thailand's most revered traditional art forms, rather than a condensed tourist showcase. For practical planning, the theatre runs three shorter daily shows at 1:00 pm, 2:30 pm, and 4:00 pm, each lasting approximately 25 minutes, which suit visitors with limited time. Tickets can often be purchased on the day, and seating is open within the auditorium. Notably, Sala Chalermkrung is also included with a Grand Palace ticket package, and a free shuttle bus connects the two sites — making it a convenient addition to a Phra Nakhon sightseeing day. The theatre is open daily from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. Check the official website at salachalermkrung.com for current show schedules and special event performances.

A truly captivating evening at the theater. From the moment I stepped in, the pristine environment set the perfect mood. The performance was a masterpiece—seeing the legendary battle between Phra Ram and Tosakanth up close was breathtaking. But what struck me most was the ethereal grace of the dancers; they didn't just walk, they glided as if floating on air. The intricate, shimmering Khon costumes under the grand finale lights were the perfect end to a magnificent show. Thai craftsmanship at its finest.

The performance at the Kong Theatre is truly beautiful, offering authentic Thai art and mythology brought to life. The show features live music and acting, with clear explanations and translations that make the intricate storyline easy to follow. There is free transportation from the exit of the Grand Palace to the theatre's entrance. The best part? The show is included with your palace admission ticket, making it a perfect and captivating conclusion to your royal visit.

I watched Khon performance for the first time and I was really impressed. The staff were very kind, welcoming, and always smiling. The performers were so dedicated and truly professional. The ticket price was very reasonable. 🚗 Parking is available at The Old Siam. 🎭 There are 3 showtimes: 1PM, 2:30PM, and 4PM. I really recommend everyone to come and experience it!

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture

Dress Modestly

Cover shoulders and knees at all temples. Carry a light scarf or sarong — some temples lend wraps, but not all. Shoes come off before entering any building with a Buddha image.

Mind Your Feet

Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.

Ask Before Photographing

Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
