Mai Khao Beach

4.6(1,447 reviews)

Stretching along the northernmost tip of Phuket, Mai Khao Beach is the island's longest beach and one of its least developed, drawing travellers who want space, quiet, and natural surroundings rather than the bustle of more commercial stretches. The approach alone sets the tone, with a tree-lined path through forest that can be covered by tuk-tuk, giving way to a broad, clean shoreline that rarely feels crowded even during peak season. The beach itself offers clear water, soft sand, and long uninterrupted stretches where visitors can find a patch entirely to themselves. The atmosphere is calm and unhurried, making it well suited to an afternoon in the water, a leisurely evening walk, or simply sitting with an open view of the sea. A handful of hotels and eateries operate along the beachfront, and planes ascending from nearby Phuket International Airport are visible overhead, adding an unexpected point of interest for some visitors. Mai Khao Beach is also a protected nesting site for sea turtles between November and February, when local conservation efforts are active along the shore. Given the beach's length and low density of facilities compared to southern Phuket, visitors are advised to bring water, sun protection, and any supplies they may need, particularly if venturing away from the hotel zone. The beach is accessible year-round, though the calmer seas between November and April make for the most comfortable swimming conditions.

🌊 Mai Khao Beach — A Peaceful Escape in Phuket Mai Khao Beach is one of Phuket’s most beautiful and unspoiled beaches, perfect for travelers who prefer peace, space, and nature over crowds and commercial beach scenes. Located in the northern part of Phuket, this beach stretches for kilometers, offering a calm and almost untouched atmosphere that feels refreshingly different from the island’s busier areas. ⸻ 🌴 Natural Beauty & Atmosphere What truly sets Mai Khao Beach apart is its raw, natural charm. The beach is wide and clean, with soft golden sand and clear blue water, framed by casuarina trees and open skies. Unlike Patong or Kata, there are no rows of beach clubs or vendors, making it ideal for quiet walks, sunset views, or simply relaxing with the sound of the waves. The sunsets here are especially stunning — peaceful, dramatic, and perfect for photography. ⸻ ✈️ Unique Experience: Planes Over the Beach Mai Khao is famous for its airplane landing views, as it sits right next to Phuket International Airport. Watching planes fly low over the beach is a unique and memorable experience, especially near the northern end. It’s a favorite spot for aviation lovers and photographers, adding a special touch that you won’t find on many beaches in the world. ⸻ 🏊 Swimming & Safety The sea at Mai Khao can be strong and unpredictable, especially during the monsoon season. While the water looks inviting, swimming is not always recommended. This beach is better suited for walking, relaxing, and enjoying nature rather than water activities. ⸻ 🏨 Resorts & Surroundings Mai Khao Beach is home to several luxury resorts, offering privacy and a high-end, tranquil vibe. Despite the upscale resorts, the area still feels quiet and uncrowded, making it ideal for honeymooners, couples, and travelers looking to disconnect and unwind. ⸻ 👍 Pros • Very quiet and uncrowded • Clean, wide, and natural beach • Beautiful sunsets and scenery • Unique airplane spotting experience • Perfect for relaxation and long walks 👎 Cons • Limited shops and restaurants nearby • Strong waves; swimming not always safe • Not ideal for nightlife or water sports

I visited Mai Khao Beach during my final few hours in Phuket, and it became one of the most memorable moments of the entire trip. The beach welcomed me with a peaceful atmosphere, soft sand, and an uninterrupted stretch of coastline that felt both natural and untouched. The late-afternoon light over the water was absolutely stunning. The combination of calm waves, open horizon, and gentle wind created a perfect place to unwind before heading to the airport. Even though the visit was short, the tranquillity of the area made it feel unhurried. If you are looking for a quiet, spacious beach away from the crowds, Mai Khao is definitely worth the stop. It is a great place to slow down, breathe, and enjoy Phuket in its most natural form. I will certainly come back on my next visit.

Beautiful beach. Pollution free. Visited this place twice for beach as it is less crowded, spent good amount of time at beach in water. Once in afternoon during our stay and once in the evening during sunset. Beautiful sunset. Made lot of beautiful memories.

Tips for Visiting Beaches & Islands

Check Monsoon Seasons

The Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi) has rough seas from May to October. The Gulf coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan) is roughest from October to December. Plan your island-hopping around these windows.

Snorkel Gear Is Cheap to Buy

Rental gear is often scratched and ill-fitting. Buy a decent mask and snorkel at a Tesco Lotus or Big C for 300–500 THB — cheaper than two days of rentals and much more hygienic.

Book Ferries on 12Go.Asia

The 12Go platform lets you compare ferry operators, times, and prices between islands. Book a day or two ahead in high season. Avoid the cheapest operators if reviews mention safety concerns.
