Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong
Perched on a small hill near the heart of Chiang Rai, Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong is one of the city's oldest sacred sites, with origins that predate the city itself. The temple's golden pagoda, believed to be around 500 years old, is thought to stand atop the remains of an even earlier structure and is venerated as a repository of Buddhist relics. Situated beside the City Pillar monument, the complex holds genuine historical and spiritual significance for the local community. Visitors can reach the top either by driving up or by taking a shaded woodland path that leads to a flight of steps, passing dragon staircase balustrades along the way. The temple complex comprises several shrines and statues set within a calm, relatively unbusy environment. The atmosphere is modest and peaceful rather than grand, making it a worthwhile stop for those seeking a quieter contrast to Chiang Rai's more heavily visited attractions. Snack stands and toilet facilities are available on site. Opening hours run daily from 06:00 to 17:00, so early morning visits are well suited to those who prefer a serene setting with fewer crowds. As with all Buddhist temples in Thailand, visitors should dress respectfully, covering shoulders and knees before entering any of the buildings or sacred areas. Entry appears to be free of charge, and no advance booking is required.

Visitor Reviews
You can drive up, or take a lovely path up through woods then up steps to the top. Several temples and statues, plus snacks stands and toilets. The pagoda is the oldest (~1000years) part housing the holy relics. Not busy when we were there around lunchtime.
Lovely little temple complex next to the City Pillar monument. The golden stupa is about 500 years old and is said to be built on the remains of an even older temple.
The original Wat was apparently older than the city, however the current buildings are much younger. We found the Wat relatively unspectacular, however its location slightly outside todays city centre on a hill made it worth the trip. Next to it is a monument designating the old centre of town (2nd photo)

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture
Dress Modestly
Cover shoulders and knees at all temples. Carry a light scarf or sarong — some temples lend wraps, but not all. Shoes come off before entering any building with a Buddha image.
Mind Your Feet
Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.
Ask Before Photographing
Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
