พิพิธภัณฑ์ทหาร มณฑลทหารบกที่ 37
Operated by the 37th Army Region, this military museum occupies an attractive older building with gardens in central Chiang Rai, within easy walking distance of the famous Clock Tower. It offers a glimpse into Thai military history and regional heritage, with a notable section covering the Chinese Nationalist troops who fled to northern Thailand following Mao's victory — a lesser-known historical story with strong local significance. The grounds and architecture alone make for a pleasant visit, and an on-site coffee and bakery shop gives visitors a reason to linger. Exhibits are arranged thematically but are presented almost entirely in Thai, so non-Thai-speaking visitors should come prepared with a translation app to get the most from the displays. The atmosphere is calm and unhurried, making it a worthwhile stop for history enthusiasts or anyone looking for a quieter experience away from the city's busier attractions. It also features as a stop on Chiang Rai's free tram tour, which is a convenient way to include it in a broader city itinerary. Good to know: Entrance is free, and the museum opens daily from 08:00 to 16:30. Modest, respectful dress is advisable when visiting military and institutional sites in Thailand. While informative for those with a genuine interest in the subject, visitors with limited time may prefer to treat it as a secondary stop rather than a primary destination.

Visitor Reviews
We visited here with the free tram tour and found this place very interesting. There was a coffee and bakery shop. I grabbed a latte and it was delicious. I then walked around and discovered that this was where the Thai cave where the kids were trapped was planned from. There was information and a video to watch about this. Great to learn about for free. Definitely take the tram it is a must.
No entrance fee. Open everyday 08.00-16.30 nice to visit walk from clock tower only 15 mins
Lovely old building and gardens with a nice coffee shop. Great views
Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture
Dress Modestly
Cover shoulders and knees at all temples. Carry a light scarf or sarong — some temples lend wraps, but not all. Shoes come off before entering any building with a Buddha image.
Mind Your Feet
Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.
Ask Before Photographing
Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
