Tarutao National Park

Tarutao National Park is one of Thailand's most significant protected marine areas, encompassing 51 forested islands off the coast of Satun province in the Andaman Sea. The park carries a compelling dual identity — it is both a haven of largely undisturbed natural beauty and a site of sobering historical weight, having served as a remote prison colony during the mid-20th century. The combination of dense jungle interiors, pristine beaches, and extensive coral reef systems makes it a destination that rewards both nature enthusiasts and those with an interest in the region's history. Visitors can explore the park's rugged coastlines, snorkel or dive among healthy coral gardens, and encounter diverse wildlife including sea turtles, hornbills, and dugongs. The park headquarters and ranger facilities are based on Ko Tarutao island itself, where remnants of the old prison settlement can still be visited on foot. The park operates daily from 08:30 to 16:00 and is accessible by boat from Pak Bara pier on the mainland. It is worth noting that Tarutao National Park closes seasonally during the monsoon period, typically from mid-May through mid-November, when rough seas make access unsafe.
